Sober Dating: How to Date Without Drinking

6 min read ยท Updated 2026-08-19

Dating is built around drinking almost by default โ€” "let's get a drink" is the standard opener โ€” so not drinking can feel like it needs explaining before you've even met. It doesn't, and the practicalities are more straightforward than people expect.

When to say something

You're not obliged to disclose anything before meeting, and you're not obliged to disclose anything at the table either. That said, mentioning it when you agree the plan tends to make the evening easier โ€” it heads off a venue built entirely around a wine list and removes the small awkwardness of the first order.

A single line in the messages does it: "I don't drink, but I'm easy on where โ€” how aboutโ€ฆ". No explanation, and it puts a suggestion in the same breath so it reads as logistics rather than a confession.

Suggest the venue

Whoever suggests the place sets the terms, and it's the easiest lever you have. Good options:

  • Coffee, which is already the second-most common first date and carries no expectation at all.
  • A bar with a real zero-proof list โ€” you get the same setting and nobody has to compromise.
  • Something with an activity: a gallery, mini-golf, a market, a walk. Activity dates are better first dates regardless of drinking, because there's something to talk about.
  • Dinner somewhere with a considered non-alcoholic menu, so ordering isn't an anticlimax.

The thing to avoid is the default wine bar, not because you can't go, but because the drink is the entire offering and yours will be an afterthought. Find venues with real non-alcoholic menus.

If they make it weird

Most people don't care. A few will probe, and one or two will push โ€” and a first date is an unusually clear place to see that happen. Someone who can't accept a straightforward "I don't drink" without an explanation is telling you something useful about how they handle other people's boundaries, on the cheapest possible occasion to learn it.

The genuine advantage

A sober first date gives you a more accurate reading. Alcohol smooths the early hours and makes almost everyone seem easier company than they are โ€” which is precisely why so many promising first dates don't survive the second. Without it you find out sooner whether the conversation actually works, and you drive home.

Should you tell a date you don't drink before meeting?

You don't have to, but a single line when you're agreeing the plan makes the evening easier โ€” it steers the venue and removes the awkwardness of the first order. Keep it brief and pair it with a suggestion so it reads as logistics rather than a disclosure.

What should you do on a date instead of drinks?

Coffee, an activity like a gallery or mini-golf, or a bar with a genuine zero-proof list. Activity dates tend to work better as first dates anyway, because there's something to do besides evaluate each other.
